Ride Transfăgărășan Indoors
Northern approach runs from forest above Cârțișoara into huge Făgăraș amphitheatre, then stacks switchbacks below Bâlea Lake. It is long, scenic, and less rhythmically uniform than many Alpine passes.
- Distance
- about 29 km from Cârțișoara to Bâlea Lake
- Elevation
- about 1,570 m gain
- Difficulty
- Very hard
Outdoor climb figures are rounded reference profiles. Exact VirtualRide distance depends on selected endpoints and available Street View path.

Route character and pacing
Early kilometres are gradual; upper mountain carries most climbing. Plan endurance session with conservative first half and stronger final switchbacks. Exact profile depends on chosen start.
Landmarks to watch for
Forest road follows Bâlea valley before emerging beneath huge glacial bowl. Waterfalls, cable-car station, and stacked final switchbacks signal transition to Bâlea Lake.
Indoor session idea
Use long lower approach as aerobic endurance, then increase one zone when road leaves forest. For 60-minute version, start higher in valley and finish at lake. Save hardest effort for visible final wall.
Street View setup
This route is not a current quick start. Build custom A-to-B route from Cârțișoara toward Bâlea Lake and inspect coverage first. Mountain road closes seasonally, which can affect available imagery.
